News and events at the Fonda Public Library

The Fonda Public Library has been celebrating Children’s Book Week with our Annual Bookmark Contest!  Children from Kindergarten through 3rd Grade have submitted bookmarks, showing their favorite books.  The bookmarks have been judged, and the winners will be announced soon!  We will be displaying all the bookmarks in the upcoming weeks, so stop in and see your favorites!

Last month we celebrated National Library week, with bars and cookies on Wednesday, and a week-long  patron appreciation drawing. We had 55 entries in our prize drawing – many thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with us.  Our winners this year were: Savannah McGee, Jan Block, Carolina Torres, Paige Erickson, Stacey Stauber, and Uriel Coon.  Many thanks to Jan Block, Kerry Noethe and Marilyn Daiker for donating their delicious bars and cookies!  Also thanks to Jill Stauter and the Easter Egg Hunt committee, for donating 3 of our children’s prizes!  We really appreciate all you do to make our library great!

We’ve recently acquired a new laptop and scanner, and have been working really hard to get all the information on it that we need.  These items were made possible by a grant from the Pocahontas County Foundation, and will help us to keep a better accounting of all the great movies and books available to our loyal patrons!  Many thanks to the Pocahontas County Foundation, and thanks also, to Alex Leu, for his very helpful tech support!

We continue to enjoy our 4:00 Wednesday Movie Matinees, and the great snacks that go with this fun weekly event!  This month, we will be enjoying the movies:

May 10th – Mars Needs Moms (PG)
May 17th – Air Bud – Seventh Inning Stretch (G)
May 24th – Daddy Day Camp (PG)

Hope you can join us for some great books, fun crafts and good times with friends!

Our Adult Book Discussion Group will be reading Bottomland by Jodi Michelle Hoover. Set in Iowa, this story follows the Hess family in the years after World War I, as they attempt to rid themselves of the Anti-German sentiment that left a stain on their name. We look forward to reading this 2017 All Iowa Reads book, and will meet Thursday, May 25th at 7 pm to discuss it.   Please call or stop in, if you would like a copy of this book to read.

This month our computer class will meet on Tuesdays - May 2nd, 9th, and 23rd, at 4:30 pm.  Come learn all about the internet and how to “surf the web” safely!

Join in on our reading incentive program!  Kids keep track of their reading minutes, and earn fabulous prizes from our great sponsors: Caseys, Subway, Pizza Ranch, Rialto Theatre, Blank Park Zoo, Iowa Cubs, and King’s Pointe!  We really appreciate how much these businesses invest in the youth of our communities – Thank you, one and all, for your generosity!!  So kids - get your reading forms, and get started READING!!
