News and events at the Fonda Public Library

It’s summertime, and we’ve got a lot of activities happening at the Fonda Public Library!

We’ve been having a great time with our Summer Reading Program, entitled “Build A Better World”!  The first week we worked on ” Building a Better Me”, and we talked about how important it is to keep ours brain working during the summer!  We built zip lines out of Legos, and had races, and our older kids even set up a chain reaction with Legos and dominoes!  It was fun to figure out what worked, what didn’t, and why!  The second week, we focused on “Building a Better Home”, and talked about things we could do to make our home environment better.  We colored pots, and planted marigolds, to make our homes better on the inside, and we made peanut butter and birdseed bird feeders, to make our homes better on the outside! The next week we are talking about “Building a Better Community”, and will be designing our ideal community, just like a real Engineer would!  We’ll be building our community, deciding where we want to live, and will even have a Road Crew, who will be building with Hot Wheel tracks!  The last day, we will focus on Building a Better World, and how we need to take care of our world, by recycling.  This will be a fun, watery day, and be held at the North Park for all the children, age Preschool to 4th graders next year. What a great way to have fun with our friends, and learn at the same time!  For dates and times, please call 288-4467 or email us at linda.mercer@fonda.lib.ia.us.

Our readers are working hard on their Reading Incentives this summer – this reading period goes from May 1st to Aug 30th.  With this program, kids and teens keep track of their reading minutes, and earn fabulous prizes from our great sponsors.  They can win a treat from Caseys, a Subway Fresh Meal, a Buffet meal from Pizza Ranch, a Rialto Theatre ticket, a Blank Park Zoo pass, 2 Iowa Cubs tickets, and a King’s Pointe waterpark pass!  We really appreciate how much these businesses invest in the youth of our communities – Thank you, one and all, for your generosity!!  So kids - get your reading forms, and get started READING, to make your summer great!!

We continue to enjoy our 4:00 Wednesday Movie Matinees, and are enjoying the great snacks that go with this fun weekly event!  This month, we watched the movies Secret Life of Pets on the 7th, and on the 14th, Cars, in recognition of the release of Cars 3!   On June 21st we will be watching Moana (PG) and on June 28th our movie will be Despicable Me (PG), coinciding with the release of Despicable 3 in theatres!  Hope you can join us for some great movies with your friends!

Our Adult Book Discussion Group is reading A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman.  This thoroughly enjoyable book will have you laughing out loud, and wiping away tears.  This is the story of a grumpy old neighbor, a cat, and the neighbors who learn that not everyone is as they seem.  We will be meeting on Thursday the 22nd at 7pm to discuss this book. Please call or stop in, if you would like a copy to read.

Our computer class will meet on Tuesdays - June 6th, 20th, and 73th, at 4:30 pm.  Come learn all about the internet and how to “surf the web” safely!
